The Chernobyl nuclear power plant was a source of pride and an example of labor activity for the citizens of the USSR. Soviet people perceived Chernobyl as a great discovery and achievement of scientists in the field of nuclear energy. And with good reason. The authorities believed that this plant would bring energy independence, and prosperity to the state.
However, human inconsistency led once-promising plans to disastrous consequences. The largest man-made disaster in history caused by a massive explosion of the fourth reactor was on the night of April 26, 1986. On April 25, 1986, an experiment was being prepared on the ChNPP site. The workers were instructed to check the operation of the turbine generator rotor. A certain workforce was prepared for this experiment, and it was supposed to take place in the daytime. However, plans quickly changed.
First May was approaching, and preparations for city demonstrations and festive events were proceeding apace. Naturally, a considerable amount of electricity would be needed on that day.
Shutting down the reactor was an important step in the experiment, but it was decided to do it nine hours later. This is where the first cause of the Chernobyl accident comes in. Due to this decision, the experiment was postponed to the nighttime and handed over to another shift, which was completely unprepared for the corresponding actions.

Already as soon as the experiment started, the first actions of plant workers were wrong. The reactor was never shut down, and the test was started at a minimum power of 200 MW, although the value should have been much higher, 700-1000 MW. Due to the uncontrollable situation, the emergency protection button was pressed. It is absolutely normal to ask why such a large-scale tragedy was not prevented. In this case, the peculiarities of the design and development of the nuclear plant safety systems played a huge role.
So, instead of the emergency button providing protection and regulating power, the opposite effect occurred, which can also be considered the cause of the Chernobyl incident. The graphite rods that were supposed to normalize the reactor power were much shorter than they should have been, so they oppositely performed their function.
The events at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant say that absolutely unqualified people participated in the test work. Moreover, they tried to accomplish the task at any cost. And this indicates only that the experiment was not of a scientific nature but of a political one.
The duration of the work carried out from the start to the moment of the explosion was approximately 40 seconds. And in such a short time, the personnel managed to provide the country with an emergency at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.
However, in addition to personnel, much more serious culprits have surfaced in the history of the disaster.
Soviet policy as well as its main actions were based on the implementation of five-year plans – systematic actions that must be completed in time. The construction of Chernobyl NPP in 1970 was also part of the five-year plan strategy.
The Soviet-era workers carried out their tasks flawlessly -moreover, they tried to exceed the plan.
If workers were so responsible, what the Chernobyl cause? We are talking about hypertrophied responsibility when a person strives to fulfill the set goal regardless of anything. And so here: the setting to build a large nuclear power plant had to be put into action. And it does not matter how it will be done.
The main causes of the Chernobyl accident were hidden in the violation of construction technologies, the neglect of safety rules, the improper design of the main structural components of the plant, including reactors.
