Dangerous Tsunami Impacts

In the English-Japanese dictionary, we can understand that the word “tsunami” means “wave in the bay. In modern usage, a tsunami is a series of ocean waves caused by the displacement of water and is radically different from an ordinary wave. Typically, a normal ocean or sea wave is generated by strong winds. Also under the influence of the sun and moon, waves are generated. Landslides, underground and underwater earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions, and underwater atomic bomb explosions can displace huge masses of water, creating a phenomenon known as a tsunami. Tsunami aftereffects are very dangerous, as water destroys everything on its path!

How Does a Tsunami Start: Tsunami Cause and Effects

Scientists have not yet learned to predict the strength and behavior of tsunamis, because any underwater event can be a precursor to a tsunami. But it is worth noting that not all underwater earthquakes create giant waves, so it is almost impossible to say what could cause a tsunami. But even a small earthquake in the ocean can cause horrific damages of tsunamis. A fairly strong earthquake can generate a very large tsunami as well as not even a small wave. The origin of an earthquake is the most important factor in this case, scientists say. If the tectonic plates move vertically during an earthquake, such an event is more likely to generate a tsunami than if the plates move horizontally. Away from the sea, where the water depth is great, the wave can be almost invisible, but as the tsunami approaches to land and the ocean depth decreases, the speed of the tsunami wave slows down and the height increases dramatically – along with the destructive potential. Let us tell you about some effects of a tsunami.

What Is a Tsunami’s Impact on Humans?

What Is a Tsunami's Impact on Humans?

The severity of the tsunami hazard to humans depends on many factors, namely the characteristics of the seismic event, the distance from its point of origin to the shore, the size of the wave, and many other factors. If the tsunami is small, it is almost undetectable and carries no danger.

So small waves cause no damage caused by tsunamis to the inhabitants of the coast.Tsunamis travel a long way before reaching shore. The arrival of the tsunami itself is marked first by an ebb tide and then by a surging tide with a rapid rise in water level and a large series of waves. Remember, a tsunami is not one wave, but always a series of big waves that result in flooding. Tsunami impacts on humans are huge when the waves are big because they cause great destruction and death.

Let us point out tsunami effects on humans:

  • The devastation and destruction. A tsunami, when it strikes the coast, carries a devastating amount of energy that takes everything in its path in a matter of seconds. Many people think that it is the tsunami waves themselves that do the most damage, but this is not true. Much of the damage comes from tsunamis aftereffects. After hitting the shore, the water penetrates cities and demolishes houses, kills people, and even floods entire islands. The water spares no one and nothing. History shows that even strong economies take a long time to recover from large tsunamis. If scientists manage to predict the occurrence of a tsunami, which is very rare, the population can be evacuated but houses, hospitals, schools, and infrastructure cannot be saved.
  • The most dangerous after-effects of the tsunami are deaths. Human life is the most important thing a tsunami can take. One tsunami can take up to half a million lives! Unfortunately, such natural disasters occur every year and many people die from them. Particularly prone to tsunamis are island countries like Japan, Jamaica, and Indonesia. Tsunamis come very quietly and unexpectedly to the population, leaving no chance for rescue.
  • Sickness is another example of a disaster that can be caused by tsunamis. Waves destroy infrastructure, leaving people without sewage and fresh water for drinking. Seawater is full of bacteria and by destroying various structures, the water gets a lot of chemicals and dirt, which spreads in the disaster area. All this creates unsanitary conditions and leads to outbreaks of infections and diseases.

Effects of Tsunami on Environment

The environmental impacts of the tsunami can not be underestimated. When the water moves away from the flooded land, it takes a lot of debris with it: trees, building materials, vehicles, containers, ships, and pollutants such as oil or chemicals. But while the damage to the environment on land can be seen, the devastation to which the marine environment has been subjected is hidden. When very strong waves hit coral reefs, some corals break off. But this is a relatively minor problem.

The bigger tsunami’s impact on the environment is that the coral surface is very sensitive, and it will suffer major damage from all sorts of silt and debris brought back by water receding from the flooded land. Also, fish and all marine life are doomed to perish in these conditions.

The power of water is frightening and people need to learn to live in harmony with nature because every natural disaster brings suffering to people. Let’s take care of nature and then there will be fewer disasters!
